About Communications and Media Studies

Unprecedented change in communications and media content, forms, technology and policy in the last decade has wide-ranging implications for business, politics, public administration and everyday life. The Master of Communications and Media Studies builds your understanding of changing global contexts of media and communication practices. You will gain a critically informed understanding of key issues affecting the global communications industry focusing on the challenges posed by the emergence of digital media, globalisation and increasing levels of cross-cultural exchange. Industry engagement through guest speakers, internships, and opportunities for site visits in Australia and abroad will enhance your knowledge and professional competency.

Flexible study

The annual Monash Creative Directions Festival gives Masters students the insights and connections they need to succeed. It is a festival of ideas and practical know-how exploring critical issues shaping the nature of work in the contemporary media, cultural and communications industries.

Depending on prior qualifications:

Entry level 1: 96 points to complete Duration: 2 years full-time, 4 years part-time

An Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) with at least credit (60%) average, or equivalent qualification and experience approved by the faculty.

Entry level 2: 72 points to complete Duration: 1.5 years full-time, 3 years part-time

An Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) in a cognate discipline including humanities or social sciences with at least credit (60%) average, or equivalent qualification and experience approved by the faculty.

Or

An Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) and an Australian graduate certificate (or equivalent) in a cognate discipline including humanities or social sciences with at least a 50 percent average in both qualifications; or equivalent qualification and experience approved by the faculty.

Entry level 3: 48 points to complete Duration: 1 years full-time, 2 years part-time

An Australian bachelor honours degree (or equivalent) in a cognate discipline including humanities or social sciences with at least credit (60%) average, or equivalent qualification and experience approved by the faculty.

You can meet English entry requirements if you have completed an English subject in your prior secondary studies that is equivalent to an Australian Year 12 level (score requirements also apply). Acceptable English subjects for international qualifications are detailed in the prerequisite subject requirements section below. Other English subjects may be accepted and are assessed on a case by case basis.
