The University of Newcastle's Master of Creative Industries offers a unique degree that will engage your creativity for social and cultural innovation; and provide a platform to explore your ideas and transform your passions into viable commercial endeavours. Using first-rate facilities you will collaborate in an interdisciplinary learning environment to transform your ideas and passions into a commercial product and learn how to expose your product to the marketplace. You will graduate with the ability to understand what industry and communities require to drive social and cultural change.

What you will study

The University of Newcastle’s Master of Creative Industries is centered on practice-based research and investigation combining practical, creative and entrepreneurial courses to align your creative skills with the most progressive industries. Our core courses focus on practical approaches to thinking about your creative processes and output. At the core of the program are three Innovation Labs designed to support the development of a single project that serves your creativity. The core innovation labs include:

  • Thinking it Through: explore the fundamental approaches that underpin the development of an innovation. Draw on ideas and practices such as interdisciplinary, creativity, collaboration and entrepreneurship to identify problems and opportunities that give rise to innovation.
  • Making It Happen: access facilities and opportunities to engage in real world or speculative creative projects that address the complexities typically encountered by creative industry professionals.
  • Making it Known: work closely with your academic supervisor and collaborators to realise how the outcomes of your work are presented, published and made known in the professional and academic context.

The above core courses are coupled with a broad range of exciting directed courses in your chosen field of study. You can play to your existing strengths or explore a new area of knowledge when selecting your directed courses, with the opportunity to take elective coursework in the following areas:

  • creative writing
  • creative and performing arts
  • music
  • design communication
  • information technology

Entry Requirements

The Master of Creative Industries is an 80 or 120 unit postgraduate qualification.

For admission into the 80-unit program, applicants must have one of the following qualifications or equivalent:

  • Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma; or
  • Bachelor Honours Degree; or
  • Bachelor Degree in a related field plus one year’s relevant work experience; or
  • Diploma or Advanced Diploma plus five years' relevant work experience. 

For admission into the 120-unit program, applicants must have one of the following qualifications or equivalent:

  • Bachelor Degree in a related field; or
  • At least seven years’ relevant work experience.

Related fields and relevant work experience includes advertising design, architecture, design, electronic games, fashion, film, music, performing arts, publishing, radio, television, visual arts, or equivalent.

Work experience can be identified through: certified copies of all relevant qualifications, a detailed CV, and a statement of service or signed letters from employers confirming your role, duties and period of employment.

English Program Requirements

All Applicants must demonstrate that they meet the University’s English proficiency requirement. Further information regarding English language proficiency requirements can be found at the English Language Proficiency for Admission Policy here.

Applicants for this program must satisfy a minimum English Language Proficiency Standard equivalent to an IELTS overall minimum of 6.5 with no subtest result below 6.0.
