About Master of Digital Media

The Master of Digital Media at the University of Newcastle has been designed to further develop your existing professional digital media skills and knowledge which can be applied to almost any field in the contemporary workforce. Technology is continually advancing, permeating our environments and affecting how we interact with the world. As a result society increasingly relies on technology and the demand for technical experts is ever growing.

This program will enhance your existing technical knowledge and encourage and embrace your creativity through a range of progressive subjects. You will graduate with the practical skills to translate ideas to reality, develop new and innovative digital media technology, critically analyse digital media design and apply the acquired knowledge across a range of work environments.

What you will study

The University of Newcastle  has developed a contemporary and unique program that is highly regarded both nationally and internationally. You will develop and learn new skills, sharpen your ability to critically analyse digital media design and engage in modern teaching techniques. Core courses to support your drive and direction include:

  • Digital Video
  • Narrative and Interactive Design
  • Design for Digital Media

In addition to the core courses, students will have the choice to specialise in one of the areas outlined in the directed courses. Some of these include, but are not limited to:

  • eCulture and Audiences
  • Usability and Interaction Design
  • Marketing Management and Planning
  • The Digital Economy

Upon completion, you will have developed a high-level understanding of digital media, the production and distribution of effective and innovative content in the digital space, and in depth knowledge of the technologies fundamental to Digital Media.

Entry Requirements

The Master of Digital Media is an 80 or 120-unit postgraduate qualification.

For admission into the 80 unit program, applicants must have one of the following qualifications or equivalent:

  • Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma; or
  • Bachelor Honours Degree; or
  • Bachelor Degree in a related field plus one year’s relevant work experience; or
  • Diploma or Advanced Diploma plus five years' relevant work experience.

For admission into the 120 unit program, applicants must have one of the following qualifications or equivalent:

  • Bachelor Degree in a related field; or
  • At least seven years’ relevant work experience.

Related fields and relevant work experience includes digital media technology, web and interactive media development, digital media industries, computer games, CGI effects development, consultancy and education.

Work experience can be identified through: certified copies of all relevant qualifications, a detailed CV, and a statement of service or signed letters from employers confirming your role, duties and period of employment.

English Program Requirements

All Applicants must demonstrate that they meet the University’s English proficiency requirement. Further information regarding English language proficiency requirements can be found at the English Language Proficiency for Admission Policy here.

Applicants for this program must satisfy a minimum English Language Proficiency Standard equivalent to an IELTS overall minimum of 6.5 with no subtest result below 6.0.
