The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is designed for those who seek to acquire specific management skills and knowledge appropriate for the maritime industry. The course will equip you with a high level of understanding of the maritime industry and provides the foundation to undertake middle and senior management positions after graduating.
The maritime industry is at the forefront of international trade for sustainable development and is an exciting, dynamic, and challenging industry in which to work. The MBA course provides a unique educational experience with a focus on an applied approach to the maritime industry, centered on strategic and analytical thinking. The MBA provides industry focused learning outcomes by applying business principles such as management and finance to the maritime industry, and a strategic perspective to international issues relating to maritime management.  The MBA aims to produce inter-culturally competent graduates who are able to contribute substantially to the sustainability of the maritime industry in senior decision-making roles.

The MBA in Maritime Management has three specialisations: Maritime Logistics, Maritime Technology, and Shipping Operations. The specialisations allow you to explore the theory and practice of business logistics and supply chain management, business operations and technology in the context of maritime industry. The specialisations provide opportunities for you to apply managerial expertise in different sectors of the maritime industry.


The MBA in Maritime Management is a nested course that includes entry and exist awards for the Graduate Certificate in Maritime Management and the Graduate Diploma of Maritime Management. These pathway courses provide you with the flexibility and choice to match your employment prospects and career/learning progression with personal goals and circumstances.

Entry Requirements

The duration of the program will depend on your background.  Holders of a cognate undergraduate degree and two years' work experience are eligible for advanced standing (i.e. normally 1 semester of credit) and hence, a reduced duration (1.5 years).

The College of Sciences and Engineering may accept as a candidate for the Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Maritime Management a person who has:

An undergraduate degree of an Australian higher education institution or the equivalent standard in any other institution and at least two years' work experience (NOTE 1.); or,

A Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Maritime Management or a related discipline; or,

A professional qualification such as a Certificate of Competency as a Master Class 1 (Unlimited) or Chief Engineer and at least two years' work experience; or,

If a first degree or professional qualification is not held, candidates may apply to the Department of Maritime and Logistics Management for consideration as a candidate. These applicants are assessed on their work experience, current managerial responsibilities and any other qualifications.

Applicants intending to undertake Maritime Technology Specialisation must have:

  • An undergraduate degree in engineering; or
  • A Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Engineering; or
  • A professional qualification in engineering such as a Certificate of Competency   Chief Engineer or Engineer Class 2.

NOTE 1: An applicant lacking the requirement of at least two year's work experience will normally need to complete Graduate Certificate in Maritime Management before being admitted to MBA in Maritime Management. In some instances, however, students may be admitted directly to MBA in Maritime Management but will still need to successfully complete all four units in their first semester of enrolment (i.e. the equivalent of Graduate Certificate in Maritime Management) in order to be allowed to continue in the course.

International students with English as a second language will need to have a minimum IELTS score of 6.0, with no band less than 6.0.

English Program Requirements

  • All methods of meeting University of Tasmania English language requirements have a validity period of 2 years unless involving a country specific qualification as listed below.
  • Each course offered by the University of Tasmania has a minimum English language requirement for entry as listed below. Applicants must also meet the academic entry requirements for each course.
  • Applicants who qualify from a University of Tasmania program, and intend to gain professional registration to become a practitioner in Australia, may need to meet the relevant Professional Accrediting Agency's English language registration standard.
  • In exceptional circumstances or cases not covered by the categories outlined below, multiple forms of evidence may be considered on a case by case basis by the Executive Director, Student Operations in consultation with the Director, Academic Quality and Standards.
  • The University reserves the right to require that any applicant be required to undergo a test of English language.
