This is a specialised Masters degree course in Economic Geology specifically designed for industry and government geologists. It is the nucleus of the postgraduate teaching program at the ARC Centre of Excellence in Ore Deposits (CODES) and forms part of the National Minerals Geoscience Masters Program. The course is usually only offered on a part-time, external basis. Only students that can provide evidence of financial and logistical support, and provide a research proposal will be considered for full-time admission. Students that are considering taking the course on a full-time basis must contact the program co-ordinator, Dr Rob Scott, to discuss their plans.
About Master of Economic Geology [S7W]
Course objectives are to increase and update the knowledge and skills required by geoscientists for the exploration and exploitation of mineral deposits. These objectives are accomplished through completion of six short courses and an in depth research project OR eight short courses. The courses will cover a spectrum of topics relevant to the exploration mining industries.
Entry Requirements
Admission to most postgraduate coursework courses at the University of Tasmania require qualifications equivalent to an Australian bachelor degree. Applicants must achieve the required grade in their qualifying studies, meet any prerequisite subjects, and meet English language requirements to be eligible for an offer.
English Language Requirements
For students who do not meet the English Language Requirement through citizenship or prior studies in English in an approved country, evidence of an approved English language test completed within the last 2 years must be provided. See the English Language Requirements page for more information.
Course Specific Requirements
Bachelor of Science with Honours is the normal entry qualification. As this course is aimed at professional geologists it would be expected that applicants have a major in Geology/Geoscience. However, for students without this qualification the entry requirements will depend on whether the applicants come from a professional industry background.
Applicants from industry without a Bachelor of Science with Honours degree will require the following:
- Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Science (Applied); and
- A minimum of two years' experience working as a professional geologist in industry or a government institution.
Minerals Geoscience Masters (MGM) students from JCU and UWA wishing to enrol in UTAS units (KEA707 - KEA712) must complete a cross-institutional application form (PDF 972.9 KB).

- All methods of meeting University of Tasmania English language requirements have a validity period of 2 years unless involving a country specific qualification as listed below.
- Each course offered by the University of Tasmania has a minimum English language requirement for entry as listed below. Applicants must also meet the academic entry requirements for each course.
- Applicants who qualify from a University of Tasmania program, and intend to gain professional registration to become a practitioner in Australia, may need to meet the relevant Professional Accrediting Agency's English language registration standard.
- In exceptional circumstances or cases not covered by the categories outlined below, multiple forms of evidence may be considered on a case by case basis by the Executive Director, Student Operations in consultation with the Director, Academic Quality and Standards.
- The University reserves the right to require that any applicant be required to undergo a test of English language.
